Née à Taipei en 1988, Shiwei est de nationalité franco-taïwanaise. Dès l’âge de trois ans et demi, sa vie est partagée entre Taïwan, la France et les États-Unis. Elle commence des études d’arts plastiques à la Sorbonne et aux ateliers de la Mairie de Paris, puis d’arts appliqués au London College of Communication, où elle obtient un BA en « Design for Interaction and Moving Image ». Elle part ensuite approfondir ses connaissances linguistiques et culturelles dans sa ville natale. Elle pratique la photographie, la vidéo, la performance, le dessin, la peinture, et mêle les techniques ancestrales aux nouvelles technologies.

« L’art comme portail »

Shiwei est essentiellement autodidacte. La liberté accordée par les professeurs des ateliers de la Mairie de Paris l’a avant tout poussée à développer ses propres questionnements sur l’art. Elle a rapidement constaté que suggérer menait le spectateur sur le chemin de la réflexion, tandis que provoquer revenait à lui imposer un discours. Dans une perspective sensualiste, elle aspire à repousser les limites et dépasser les conventions esthétiques afin de dévoiler de nouveaux horizons. En effet, bien que Shiwei maîtrise trois langues, dont deux des plus parlées dans le monde, elle considère l’art comme le moyen de communication par excellence. Plus instinctif et primitif que le langage, il touche selon elle les sens par sa beauté, et permet d’ouvrir, en douceur, un dialogue authentique avec un public qu’elle veut le plus hétéroclite possible.

Si la mondialisation peut complexifier la perception de l’Autre en le rendant virtuellement accessible, Shiwei tente d’abord de le percevoir comme un semblable, et non comme un Étranger. Elle tend à réconcilier l’âme et la chair, l’intellect et le corps dans une unité autorisant la diversité mais excluant toute éventualité de discrimination. Ses séries photographiques rappellent l’origine commune de tous les hommes, comme « Dream of Birth », et mettent en exergue leur animalité et leur adaptabilité, notamment «  Hybrid Instinct ». Ses performances sont l’occasion de révéler aux spectateurs la valeur sacrée du corps humain, trop souvent profané par son utilisation à des fins publicitaires. Elles lui permettent en outre d’entrer en communion non seulement ponctuellement avec le public, mais aussi durablement avec le monde, et nous invitent à suivre le même chemin. Au travers d’un art qu’elle veut le plus total possible, elle interroge donc les notions de diversité culturelle et de singularité, aujourd’hui prônées par des organismes mondiaux et scandée par des slogans commerciaux.

Born in Taipei in 1988, Shiwei is of both French and Taiwanese nationalities. Since the age of three, she has been living in between Taiwan, France, and the United States. She started Fine Art studies at the Sorbonne University, and at the Ateliers de la Mairie de Paris, then attended the London College of Communication, where she started a “Design for Interaction and Moving Image” BA. She then deepened her knowledge of Chinese language and culture at her birth place. She works in multiple media, including photography, video, performance, drawing, painting, blending ancestral techniques with emerging technologies.

“Art as a portal”

Shiwei is above all an autodidact. Influenced by the freedom of creativity granted by her teachers at the Ateliers de la Mairie de Paris, she developed her own understanding on arts. It appeared to her that suggestion allows the public to think, while provocation aims at telling them what to think. She aspires to push boundaries and transgress the conventions within the art world. Close to the Sensualist philosophy, she creates new visual contexts in order to give us access to emotions and knowledge. Although Shiwei fluently speaks three languages, including two of the most spoken in the world, she considers art as the best mean of communication. It is, according to her, more instinctive and primitive than language, since it provides emotional experiences and aesthetic feeling, which lead to a respectful and true dialogue with the public – a crowd whom she wishes to be as heterogeneous as possible.

Given that globalization can complicate the perception of the Other by making him virtually more accessible, Shiwei tries to see through superficial differences. She tends to reunite flesh and soul, mind and body, by creating coherence between diversity and common nature of the human being, like in her series of photographs “ Dream of Birth”. She also evokes the animality and adaptability of mankind in “Hybrid Instinct”. Her performances reveal to the viewer the sanctity of human body, while advertising too often desecrates it. To her, performing is also a way of communicating, sharing feelings with the public, as well as with the world, and of inviting us all to follow the same path. She questions the wide-spread notions of cultural diversity and uniqueness, especially used in the marketing and political fields.
